The BBC World News channel has been blocked in Pakistan following the broadcast of a documentary that questioned the country’s commitments to the ‘war on terror’. The country’s cable TV organisation has reportedly pulled BBC World News from most parts of Pakistan, with the remainder set to vanish on Wednesday.
The documentary, Secret Pakistan, explored commonly aired accusations from western officials that Pakistan is not fulfilling its supposed role in the fight against terrorism. These accusations have become more persistent in recent months following the discovery of Osama bin Laden living in the country.
The BBC isn’t the only western media source to be banned in Pakistan for being perceived to be ‘anti-Pakistan’. The latest move comes as tensions between Pakistan and the west following the killing of Pakistan soldiers at the weekend in what appears to have been a mistaken US airstrike.
