Rumours that dancehall star Vybz Kartel had escaped from a jail in Jamaica on Wednesday night have been dispelled. Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, was allegedly being held on suspicion of murder, but it seems the story of his alleged prison break was a Twitter rumour.
It was reported that at around 1am on Wednesday, several prisoners took control of the prison. Twelve prison guards were said to have been injured, two as a result of gunshot wounds, and another guard apparently died of a suspected heart attack. There were unconfirmed reports that a number of guns had been smuggled into the prison to aid in the breakout.
Officials have now denied that any such prison breakout occurred, and Kartel – along with the other supposedly escaped prisoners – is apparently not on the loose.
35-year-old Vybz Kartel is a dancehall star, businessman and artist. He has worked on projects with the likes of Eminem, Jay-Z and Akon, but in October 2011 he was allegedly accused of involvement in a plot to kill businessman Barrington ‘Bossie’ Burton.
