Irish gangsters have reportedly put a bounty on the head of crime reporter Mick McCaffrey. The €20,000 (£17,200) plan is reportedly at an advanced stage, and police have been providing extra security to McCaffrey, including offering him a safe house.
Six people have reportedly been arrested as part of the investigation into the plot, which reportedly is also targeting two others. The gang behind the threat are said to be from the west side of Dublin, and are reportedly acting after a jailed boss became angry at an article written by McCaffrey.
Threats against journalists are not particularly new in Ireland. The most famous example was the shooting of Veronica Guerin in the mid 90s, a case that still divides Ireland. Her assassination led to a widespread crackdown on the activities of the country’s gangs.
