Warren Weinstein, the US citizen kidnapped by gunmen in Pakistan three months ago, is reportedly being held by al-Qaida. Ayman al-Zawahri reportedly claims in a new video that Weinstein will be held until the US pulls out of the region completely.
In the video, al-Zawahri claimed that the policy of holding Weinstein is little different to the US policy of indefinitely detaining many who are suspected of being linked to al-Qaida. Weinstein worked on projects with USAID, delivering aid to regions of Pakistan.
So far, there’s no indication of the location where Weinstein is being kept, and no ransom demand has been made. It’s possible that he has been taken to Afghanistan, in which case it could be almost impossible for the US to find him without significant help from local tribes.
