As the Carrier IQ row continues to grow, Apple has become the first major phone manufacturer to announce it will drop the controversial software altogether from its devices.
Carrier IQ is software that is allegedly capable of logging certain user actions on phones and relaying that information back to phone companies. Most companies say that they use the information only to improve their networks and to spot possible problems. But some consumers are concerned that they never opted in to having their data treated in this way.
Last month, Carrier IQ released a statement defending its software, and some writers have come to the company’s defence. Others, however, such as Senator Al Franken and Paul Ohm have been less sympathetic.
