Facebook has purchased online check-in service Gowalla for an undisclosed sum. The aim of the purchase is reportedly to bolster the new Timeline Facebook feature in some as-yet-unspecified way.
Gowalla founder Josh Williams and most of the company’s team will now transfer to Facebook and work on the Timeline feature, which is gradually rolling out to all of Facebook’s 700m+ users. It’s not clear how Gowalla will integrate with Facebook, but the Gowalla service has lately become more of a travel guide than a straight check-in service.
It’s not yet clear whether the standalone Gowalla service will continue, but Facebook has in the past been more than willing to buy up and then shut down services in order to roll their features into its core social network.
