Ron Paul joins Jon Huntsman in refusing to take part in Donald Trump Republican debate

Ron Paul has confirmed that he will not take part in the Iowa debate hosted by Donald Trump later this month. He joins Jon Huntsman, who confirmed his absence yesterday, in what some commentators see as a kind of ‘dignity test’ for the GOP field.

The link above contains a pretty strongly worded denouncement of the involvement of Trump in the debate, with campaign chairman Jesse Benton suggesting that the event is beneath the dignity of the office of the presidency.

It remains to be seen which of the other GOP contenders decide to attend the debate, which could be a real acid test of their willingness to flirt with the ‘Trump side’ of the party. The other candidates have so far given no indication of whether they’ll attend, or (in some cases) whether they’ll even be in the race by then.
