2012 Presidential Campaign

With Herman Cain out, Newt Gingrich storms to the lead in Iowa poll

Less than 24 hours after Herman Cain suspended his presidential campaign, Newt Gingrich looks to be the main beneficiary. The former House Speaker topped a poll of likely Republican caucusgoers in Iowa.

Gingrich was backed by 25% of those surveyed in the poll, a clear margin over second-placed Ron Paul who secured 18%. Mitt Romney came third on 16%. The result is significant because in the previous Iowa poll, Gingrich scored just 7%, so it’s clear that he’s enjoying a significant upswing in fortunes.

It’s still not clear who will be the beneficiary of Herman Cain’s endorsement in the nomination battle, which could swing the result. Some believe he will choose to back either Michele Bachmann or Newt Gingrich, due to ideological affiliations; if he chooses Gingrich, Mitt Romney’s campaign might have some serious work to do.
