Virginia Tech on lockdown after police officer reportedly shot, plus duck pond incident

Virginia Tech is on lockdown after reports of shots being fired. A lone gunman is being sought. He is described as a white male wearing gray sweat pants, with a gray hat with a neon green brim, plus a maroon hoodie and a backpack. There are no confirmed reports of any injuries, but persistent rumours say that a police officer has been shot.

The Virginia Tech homepage confirms the reports and advises students to remain where they are or seek refuge if possible. There are very few other details, but more unconfirmed reports claim that there is a ‘second crime scene’ at the campus duck pond. The situation is unfolding very quickly and there’s a lot of information, but also a lot of misinformation, floating around.

Virginia Tech was of course the location of one the deadliest school shooting in American history, when Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people and injured many more in 2007. That incident led to criticism from some quarters of the response from authorities, although others claimed that it is too easy in hindsight to apportion blame.
