There has been some excitement in recent days over a NASA photo of Mercury that some people claim shows a cylindrical alien object in orbit around the planet. But it seems there’s a mundane explanation after all: it’s a digital artefact.
The object appears on an image of a coronal mass ejection (CME) travelling from the sun. Initially posted on YouTube, video showing the object claims there’s a good chance that it’s some kind of alien ship.
Sadly, that seems not to be the case. The ‘object’ is in fact the remnant of a median imaging technique used for interpreting the images. Not that this explanation will please everyone: sure, it’s the right answer, but is it the most fun?
