Radford student Ross Truett Ashley identified as alleged Virginia Tech gunman

The gunman who shot dead a campus police officer before shooting himself at Virginia Tech on Thursday has been identified by police. He was allegedly Ross Truett Ashley, a 22-year-old student from nearby Radford University.

The cause of the shooting is not yet known, but police say they do not believe that Ross Truett Ashley had any connection to the dead police officer, Deriek Crouse. There are unconfirmed reports that Ross Truett Ashley had allegedly stolen a car from an office in Radford the day before the Virginia Tech shooting, with that car subsequently being found on the Virginia Tech campus.

The shooting triggered a lockdown at Virginia Tech after Deriek Crouse. It was soon reported that a second body had been found, but that body turned out to be the shooter, who had apparently shot himself.
