At least 13 dead after small plane crashes into Felixberto school in residential area of Parañaque City, Philippines

A light aircraft crashed into a residential area in Parañaque City in the Philippines on Saturday afternoon, killing at least 13 people (including five from the plane) and causing a huge fire. Most of those killed on the ground are believed to have been children from Felixberto Serrano Elementary School.

The number of casualties on the ground was possibly reduced by the fact that the school was not open for classes at the time. But students had been attending a Christmas party, and although the party finished at noon, some students had stayed behind to play in the schoolyard.

The plane had just taken off from the domestic airport near Merville Subdivision when it came down at around 2:45pm local time. The exact cause of the crash is unclear, but there are reports that the pilot had contacted the airport to report unspecified mechanical problems, and that he was attempting to return to the airport when the plane came down.
