Indian police have arrested six people in connection with a massive hospital fire in Kolkata, in which 89 people died. Three of the dead are confirmed to have been staff members, the rest are believed to have been patients and visitors.
The cause of the fire, which severely damaged the seven-storey building, is not yet clear, but it is belived to have started at around 3am in the building’s basement. The alarm was reportedly raised by residents of a nearby slum, who were apparently the first to notice smoke rising from the building.
There is anger in some quarters over alleged inaction of hospital staff. Some have allegedly accused staff of abandoning patients rather than trying to save them. Some people who were visiting at the time, and who survived, have also alleged that there was little help once the fire started.
