A US teenager has been freed in the Philippines after spending 5 months being held captive by rebels. It’s not clear whether Kevin Lunsmann, 14, was let go deliberately, or whether he escaped.
Kevin Lunsmann was abducted in July along with his mother Gerfa Yeatts Lunsmann and his cousin. His mother was freed in October and his cousin escaped a few weeks later, but until now the rebels were keeping hold of the boy.
Kevin Lunsmann is said to be on southern Basilan island following his release. It’s not clear whether a ransom was paid, but the Abu Sayyaf Islamic group – which is suspected of being behind the kidnapping – is often accused of carrying out kidnappings of westerners in an attempt to force ransoms to be paid.
