Virginia Tech shooter not believed to be linked to dead campus cop Deriek Crouse

Police investigating Thursday’s deadly shooting at the Virginia Tech campus say that there is no apparent link between the still-unidentified shooter and the campus cop, 39-year-old Deriek Crouse, who was killed. The shooter subsequently shot himself.

Crouse was shot while conducting a routine traffic stop. However, contrary to earlier reports, the shooter was apparently not the person driving the car. It’s believed that the shooter targeted Crouse before escaping on foot and subsequently shooting himself nearby shortly after the officer’s death.

Virginia Tech used a sophisticated alert system to keep students informed of the situation, having previously experienced the worst ever US school shooting back in 2007. Many students were alerted to the incident by text message, and were told to find a safe place as the campus went into lockdown.
