George Michael admits he’s lucky to be alive after bout of acute pneumonia

Pop star George Michael has spoken of his gratitude as he spoke to the media for the first time since being hospitalised with acute pneumonia. He said he was glad just to be alive after a touch and go period during which there was fevered speculation about his wellbeing in the media.

The 48-year-old told reports that he had been on the brink of death for several days. He was in Austria when he fell ill, and spent more than three weeks in hospital being treated and, in his words, ‘kept alive’.

George Michael returned home earlier this week and says that he is planning to resume the European tour that he had to cut short when he fell ill. His illness sparked various rumours about his health, with some claiming that he was about to die. It seems some of those rumours might have been closer to the mark than cynics initially believed.
