Nigeria has again been rocked by explosions and attacks linked to the country’s ongoing religious divide. St Theresa Church in Madalla, close to the capital Abuja, was rocked by a large explosion as worshippers celebrated Christmas mass.
The cause of the explosion is not yet clear, but authorities have already revealed that they do not have enough ambulances in the area to take the injured to hospital. And the nature and timing of the attack mean it is highly likely to be the work of the radical Muslim sect Boko Haram.
Almost 500 people have been confirmed dead in the past year as a result of Boko Haram’s ongoing campaign. The group wants to impose Sharia law across Nigeria, and tensions between Muslims and Christians have been growing increasingly combustible.
