Yemen’s president Ali Abdullah Saleh is preparing to quit and head to the US, but he seems determined to continue to exert a political influence on his home country even after his official departure.
We have been here before, of course. Saleh has promised to leave many times, yet has always found an excuse to remain in power. And while the international community seems convinced he will really quit this time, there have been signs recently that he is beginning to drag his feet.
Saleh also seems to be trying to position his son as a possible successor, despite overwhelming public opposition to such an idea. As government forces continues to fight rebels throughout the country, it is clear that Ali Abdullah Saleh has no plans to entirely lose his influence in Yemen just yet.
