Obituary: Lord of the Rings, Star Wars sword master Bob Anderson dies aged 89

Bob Anderson, the sword master whose work was featured in films such as the Star Wars and Lord of the Rings series, has died at the age of 89. The former competitive fencer passed away in hospital on January 1st.

Anderson’s most famous film role was probably his work as Darth Vader in the majority of the character’s lightsaber fights. As sword master, Anderson came up with the distinctive fighting styles used in many films, also including the likes of The Princess Bride, the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and a number of James Bond instalments.

As well as his movie work, Anderson was a highly respected fencer. And while he might not be one of the most well-known film stars, he has probably appeared in more box office hits over the past few decades than any other actor.
