Tits? Pre-watershed Sherlock Holmes Lara Pulver nude scenes upset approximately 3 people

Attempts are being made this week to drum up controversy over some nudity featured in A Scandal in Bohemia, the New Year’s Day episode of the BBC’s updated Sherlock series. The scenes, featuring actress Lara Pulver as Irene Adler, revealed very little but were aired about 25 minutes before the watershed.

For many years, British TV has been beholden to the concept of the watershed, which is the imaginary 9pm line before which certain things – such as nudity and scenes of violence or drug-taking – are not supposed to be shown. In other words, nudity at 8:59pm is generally considered off-limits but 9:01pm is fine.

It’s worth reading the comments on the Daily Mail’s story about the nudity to see the extent to which even that newspaper’s readership seem unconcerned. In fact, the whole fuss seems a little unenthusiastic. After all, a good complaint about nudity is a wonderful excuse to show plenty of images of the actress in question. And as the show’s producer Steven Moffat points out on Twitter, the nude scenes should still be available on the iPlayer and the DVD is out soon enough.
