Eleven killed in hot air balloon crash near Carterton, New Zealand

Eleven people have been killed in a hot air balloon crash near Carterton, New Zealand. The accident reportedly occurred at around 7:30am local time, with the balloon apparently on fire as it came in to land.

All eleven people onboard are now believed to have died, including the pilot. A local man saw the balloon descending rapidly and went to call for help. When he returned, he saw thick black smoke coming from the spot where the balloon came down.

The exact circumstances of the crash are not clear, but authorities are said to be at the site examining the wreckage.
