Gabrielle Giffords returns to Tucson to mark first anniversary of shooting

Gabrielle Giffords has returned to Tucson, Arizona to mark the first anniversary of the shooting in which she nearly died and in which six people died. A bell tolled six times at exactly 10:11am, to mark the deaths as well as the struggles of the thirteen people who survived the shooting.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, it was wrongly reported by some media outlets that Giffords had died. She was close to death for a long time, but has since made a remarkable – thought still incomplete – recovery. Whether she continues with her political career remains to be seen.

Giffords has a few more months left in which to decide whether she will stand in November’s elections. She is believed to have around $800,000 raised in case she runs, although it’s by no means certain that she will do so.
