Reddit has confirmed plans to hold a 12-hour blackout on January 18th as part of a protest against SOPA. The blackout will coincide with an appearance by (among others) Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian before a House hearing into the subject.
Reddit isn’t the only major site to be considering a blackout, with the likes of Facebook, Twitter and Google also said to be considering such a move. No word, though, as to whether any of them will actually go through with it. Reddit users are already pretty aware of SOPA, but a shutdown by Google would bring the issue to the attention of a much wider section of the American public, many of whom simply have no idea what SOPA is all about.
As the debate over SOPA continues, critics are noting the apparent reluctance of mainstream news organisations to cover the issue. In many cases, these news organisations are owned by companies that support SOPA. Weird, that…
