Wired website hit by Anonymous?

The Wired website appeared to be down, allegedly, briefly on Wednesday as a result of an alleged Anonymous attack. Anonymous has claimed on Twitter to have taken the site down, although the action seems to have only affected the .com site, with Wired UK still functioning. At the time of writing, Wired now seems to be back up and running.

It’s not immediately clear why Anonymous would target Wired. The hashtag #IWannaReadPartIII was used, suggesting some kind of umbrage about an article. At the moment, there’s a high profile article titled 2011: The Year Anonymous Took On Cops, Dictators and Existential Dread on the site, although it’s not obvious whether that was the catalyst.

In the past, Wired has attracted criticism for its handling of the publication of the Bradley Manning chat logs. Glenn Greenwald led the criticism, though Wired issued a pretty robust defence of its approach to the issue. Whether this has anything to do with the sudden alleged attack on the site is not clear.
