Cheezburger joins Reddit in January 18th SOPA blackout protest, but will Facebook and Wikipedia follow?

The Cheezburger network has confirmed that it will follow Reddit in holding a blackout on January 18th, in protest at the upcoming SOPA legislation. All eyes are now on the likes of Wikipedia and Facebook to see if they will follow suit.

It’s fair to say that most people have no idea what SOPA is, and blacking out sites in protest will help raise awareness. Reddit and Cheezburger are a start, but if Wikipedia or Facebook joined the protest there would really be some major awareness increases. Facebook is considered unlikely to make the move, while Wikipedia (along with Twitter) is said to be considering joining in.

Efforts to encourage Facebook to join the blackout are gathering pace. A number of Facebook groups have been set up to try to organise spontaneous blackouts, with the idea being that if Facebook won’t organise a protest then at least its users can be encouraged to launch their own awareness-increasing strike. Not as effective as an official Facebook protest, but an improvement on nothing.
