At least ten people have been killed in a series of fiery crashes on Florida’s Interstate 75 south of Gainesville. The accidents occurred at around 4am on Sunday, and involved at least five cars and six tractor-trailers.
The cause of the crash is not clear, but the highway had reportedly been closed for some time due to smoke from a nearby brush fire. As well as the 10 confirmed dead, at least 18 people were taken to hospital, with 6 taken to the trauma centre and 3 requiring surgery.
All six lanes of the highway were closed following the accident, with wreckage reportedly strewn for up to a mile in each direction. As dawn came, eyewitnesses reported that several vehicles had been completely burnt out, some with bodies still inside.
